DARK FUNERAL - Le urla dei dannati

 

Sono conosciute come uno delle band black metal più oscure e demoniache nel panorama della musica estrema e la loro origine affonda nelle gelide ed inospitali terre svedesi dove il buio e la rigidità di quei luoghi hanno ispirato molte altre band che compongono questo genere di musica.

Il Sabba Maledetto Metal Circle,in occasione dell’annuncio del loro nuovo album,parlerà degli infernali Dark Funeral uno dei gruppi precursori del black metal degli anni ’90 ed oggi capostipiti del black metal di nuova generazione.

I Dark Funeral emersero dalle profonde ombre dimoranti nella mente del chitarrista Micke Svanberg,fedele praticante del satanismo di matrice laveyana che insieme al chitarrista Blackmoon li fondò nella città di Stoccolma nel lontano 1993. Svanberg assunse lo pseudonimo di Lord Ahriman (un’entità malvagia e distruttrice a guida di una schiera di demoni indicati come daēva) e sempre nello stesso anno si diede da fare per reclutare insieme a Blackmoon il batterista Draugen ed il cantante Themgoroth completando in questo modo la formazione del gruppo che pubblicò il suo primo EP omonimo nel gennaio del 1994.

Dopo le registrazioni,Draugen lasciò il gruppo per motivi personali ed il suo posto fu preso da Equimanthorn che prese parte alla prima esibizione dal vivo dei Dark Funeral in un pub norvegese nel maggio del 1994 attirando l’attenzione dell’etichetta No Fashion Records con la quale la band si mise al lavoro al suo primo e vero oscuro progetto The Secrets Of The Black Arts: il sigillo era stato rotto e le tenebre dell’Inferno liberate e si preparavano da quel momento ad avvolgere ed a ghermire per sempre tutta la scena musicale heavy metal senza avere intenzione di lasciarla libera di intravedere un solo spiraglio di luce.

GLI INCOMPARABILI SOVRANI DEL BLACK METAL SVEDESE: THE SECRETS OF THE BLACK ARTS E VOBISCUM SATANAS

Ingaggiati dalla No Fashion,i Dark Funeral eruttarono fuori dalle più profonde viscere dell’Inferno il loro primo full-length The Secrets Of The Black Arts nel 1995 divenuto oggi noto per i suoi riffing oscuri,demoniaci e lineari che esaltano i poteri del Principe delle Tenebre e il mistero racchiuso nell’oscurità in canzoni come The Secrets Of The Black Arts,My Dark Desires e When Angels Forever Die.

Poco dopo,Themgoroth decise di abbandonare la band per motivi personali,ed il suo posto dietro al microfono fu preso dal mefistofelico cantante Emperor Magus Caligula che come Lord Ahriman era un fiero seguace del satanismo di LaVey. La voce perversa e diabolica di Caligula contribuì alla stesura del nuovo album dei Dark Funeral Vobiscum Satanas che vide luce (ovviamente si fa per dire!) nel 1998;divenendo il disco più tetro,oscuro e tenebroso dei Dark Funeral soprattutto grazie alle tracce come Ravenna Strigoi Mortis,Vobiscum Satanas e Thy Legions Come.

Entrambi i dischi incontrarono uno strepitoso successo fra gli ascoltatori del black metal e fecero dei Dark Funeral una delle band più acclamate a livello mondiale e sull’onda di questi ottimi esiti tornarono nel 2001 con la pubblicazione del terzo disco ufficiale Diabolis Interium.

DIABOLIS INTERIUM,ATTERA TOTUS SANCTUS ED ANGELUS EXURO PRO ETERNUS: LE URLA DEI DANNATI

Affermatisi ora come uno dei più importanti gruppi della scena black metal,i Dark Funeral tornarono nel 2001 con il disco Diabolis Interium,concepito da una furia demoniaca senza precedenti che fa da asse portante nelle tracce The Arrival Of Satan’s Empire,Hail Murder e Goddess Of Sodomy palesando un leggero distacco dalle atmosfere più cupe e lugubri dei primi due album.

I Dark Funeral presero parte ad un tour mondiale dove infiammarono migliaia di tappe in giro fra le nazioni registrando anche il concerto De Profundis Clamavi Ad Te Domine quando la band fece approdo in Sud America nel 2004.

Nel 2005,la band pubblicò la sua quarta fatica Attera Totus Sanctus acclamato dai loro fan grazie alle feroci canzoni come King Antichrist,666 Voices Inside ed Atrum Regina per poi intraprendere moltissimi altri tour dove i Dark Funeral si esibirono eseguendo i migliori successi di tutti i loro album.

L’autunno del 2009 vide i Dark Funeral tornare al centro della scena con il nuovo album Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus in cui pezzi come The End Of Human Race,My Funeral ed In My Dreams conferiscono all’album un’atmosfera apocalittica con temi inneggianti alla perversione ed alla violenza che affiancano le tematiche sataniche.

Dal giorno in cui i Dark Funeral fecero calare la notte eterna sui palchi di tutto il globo sconsacrando senza rimorso ogni luogo in cui misero piede trascorsero tredici anni e proprio verso gli anni 2009-2010,Caligula decise di lasciare la band per stare vicino alla famiglia da poco realizzata;i Dark Funeral si presero di conseguenza una pausa interrotta solo da alcuni tour tornando finalmente in studio dopo sette anni quando decisero di registrare il nuovo full-length Where Shadows Forever Reign.

ULTIMI ANNI

Dopo vari cambi di formazione che tennero la band piuttosto instabile per circa sette anni,nel 2016 i Dark Funeral composero e produssero l’album Where Shadows Forever Reign che segnò un ritorno alle oscure sonorità dei primi due capolavori.

Per marzo 2022,è prevista invece l’uscita del nuovo album We Are The Apocalypse: a parte ascoltare il singolo uscito il 7 gennaio 2022,è ancora presto per conoscere qualcosa sulla composizione del disco ma sapendo di che band si sta parlando è quasi certo che il nuovo disco sarà un nuovo,micidiale e malefico concept di oscenità e violenza unite insieme da un’oscurità opprimente,gelida ed infinita che sarà presto sfogata con potenza sui palchi di tutto il globo confermando ancora una volta il meritato riconoscimento nell’universo metal nel portare il nome che li ha resi dannatamente celebri: gli Incomparabili Sovrani dello Swedish-black metal.

LA PAROLA A LORD AHRIMAN

Hail Satan Ahriman! Benvenuto nel Sabba Maledetto Metal Circle! Grazie infinite per il tempo che ci hai concesso. Partiamo subito dalla prima domanda: i Dark Funeral nacquero nel lontano 1993. Da cosa partì l’idea di fondare la band? Uscivi da altre esperienze musicali prima dei Dark Funeral? Com’era la scena musicale black metal negli anni ’90? Racconta.

La mia prima band erano i Satan’s Disciples. E dopo fondammo i Dark Funeral,ma prima che finalmente diventassimo i veri Dark Funeral,all’inizio del 1993,la band si chiamava Ahriman con Nicko alla batteria e non Draugen che alla fine finì per diventare il batterista nel nostro mini-CD di debutto. Tuttavia non volevo che la band fosse conosciuta con il mio nome e con Blackmoon (R.I.P.) decidemmo di chiamarci come Dark Funeral mentre eravamo un giorno a casa mia. Il resto è storia. La scena black metal degli anni ’90 era alquanto folle e caotica così come lo eravamo anche noi,molto diversa dal mio stile di vita più controllato che è oggigiorno. La vita è un viaggio oscuro: impari,migliori e sviluppi… Beh,almeno alcuni di noi…

Il sound della musica dei Dark Funeral è,ovviamente,caratteristico della seconda ondata di black metal originatasi negli anni ’90 proprio in Scandinavia… So che sembra strano dirlo ma… avevi avuto band o musicisti in particolare che t’ispirarono allora? Se sì,quali?

Non proprio. Quando abbiamo fondato la band sentivamo di voler creare qualcosa di nuovo e diverso da quello che tutti stavano facendo in quel momento. Rimango su quel pezzo: percorrere la nostra oscura strada.

Già che ci siamo scaviamo un po’ nel passato e poi torniamo a noi: la seconda ondata di black metal si originò dalla mente di Euronymous che con i suoi Mayhem ed il suo Helvete diede inizio ad un nuovo modo di fare musica che a sua volta partorì una nuova subcultura che prese piede in Norvegia ed in altri paesi. Band svedesi come voi,gli Abruptum ed i Marduk trasse ispirazione dalla neonata scena norvegese per i vostri album? Se non fu così,cosa spinse anche gli svedesi a cimentarsi in un genere così estremo che negli anni ’90 esplose come un tuono proprio nelle terre del nord Europa? Che differenza c’è fra il black metal norvegese e quello svedese nati in quegli anni? Hai mai avuto contatti con i ragazzi della scena black metal norvegese che secondo alcune voci costituivano il nucleo del famigerato Black Circle? Secondo alcune persone c’erano molte tensioni e rivalità fra i musicisti della scena svedese e quella norvegese: è vero? Se sì,quale fu il motivo che portò a questi antagonismi?

A quei tempi c’erano rivalità tra molte band svedesi e norvegesi ma la cosa non ci riguardava. Eravamo buoni amici dei Dissection,dei Marduk e degli Abruptum. Abbiamo anche avuto ottimi contatti,rispetto reciproco ed amicizie con molte delle nostre controparti norvegesi che esiste ancora oggi.

Ti pongo qualche domanda personale: com’è nata in te la passione per questo genere? E per la chitarra? Da quanto tempo la suoni e cosa ti spinse a farlo intraprendendo la strada che ti ha portato dove sei oggi?

Vengo da una famiglia orientata verso la musica,quindi essa è sempre stata dentro di me. Detto ciò,non ho mai sognato di divenire un musicista o un cantautore a tempo pieno,ma sono sempre stato attratto dalla musica e dal suonare vari strumenti,fino a quando non sono giunto alla chitarra. Quando ero più giovane,mi piaceva di più il teatro,creare brutali effetti cinematografici e persino diventare regista. Ora che ci penso,è probabilmente per questo che ho sempre visto i miei testi come un film,un’espressione musicale e visiva che deve andare di pari passo. All’epoca,ho anche avuto grande interesse verso film horror senza censure che iniziai a collezionare già a 12 anni. Perciò anch’io sono sempre stato contro la censura. Quando avevo 14 anni,avevo una materia facoltativa a scuola che si chiamava “film e teatro”. Ma torniamo alla musica: dopo il nostro costante successo con i nostri album e tour,che ovviamente includono un’enorme quantità di duro lavoro ed impegno,credo di aver ormai preso il treno sul binario senza pensarci troppo,nulla di più. Voglio migliorare sempre di più,sfidare e spingermi oltre i limiti di tutto ciò a cui vado incontro,a modo mio/nostro.

Le tematiche dei Dark Funeral,soprattutto nei primi due lavori,ruotano tutte fra oscurità e satanismo mentre da Attera Totus Sanctus si inizia ad avvertire un’atmosfera più “apocalittica” e violenta: perché ci fu questo cambio di stile che conseguentemente cambiò anche il sound dei Dark Funeral che divenne più veloce ed aggressivo? Quanto le tematiche dei Dark Funeral sono correlate alla tua filosofia di vita?

Beh,poiché la musica che componiamo riflette un’era del tempo nelle nostre vite quando è scritta,è proprio come la vita stessa. Si attraversano diverse fasi e stati d’animo,così anche con la musica. Voglio mettermi alla prova anche in modi diversi,quindi è naturale che la musica differisca in ogni disco. Tuttavia,penso che abbiamo mantenuto il nucleo della nostra musica praticamente intatto con alcune naturali progressioni ed eccezioni sperimentali ovviamente.

Qual è il lavoro che maggiormente apprezzi dei Dark Funeral? C’è qualche disco della vostra carriera in cui cambieresti qualcosa che magari non ti soddisfa?

Se potessi,ci sono cose in ogni album su cui mi piacerebbe apportare alcune piccole modifiche,ma sai una cosa? Ho imparato ad accettare che ogni disco è una testimonianza del suo tempo. E so che tutti noi abbiamo fatto del nostro meglio quando sono stati scritti e registrati,quindi non c’è davvero motivo di guardare indietro ed avere rimpianti. Al momento,sento che We Are The Apocalypse è il nostro miglior album: riflette anche il mio/nostro stato d’animo in questo momento.

Parliamo di We Are The Apocalypse,il vostro nuovo album la cui uscita è prevista nel marzo di quest’anno: su cosa sarà incentrato l’album? Sarà un ritorno verso sonorità oscure come in The Secrets Of The Black Arts o si proseguirà verso note più scabrose come in Angelus Exuro pro Eternus? Alcuni fan hanno espresso il parere sul nuovo singolo Let The Devil In di essere troppo “lento” per l’”assenza di blast-beat” e stanno sollevando dubbi sulla qualità dell’album: hai sul mio blog libero spazio per rispondere e spazzare via tutti i timori dei fan più incerti sulla qualità del disco.

Onestamente pensavo che fossero solo i preti e le persone religiose a giudicarti rapidamente appena ti vedono,ma a quanto pare sembra che questa piaga abbia raggiunto anche la scena black metal: davvero molto triste! Detto ciò,la risposta generale è stata letteralmente sorprendente. E questo è davvero tutto ciò che conta. L’album We Are The Apocalypse uscirà il 18 marzo 2022 sotto la Century Media Records. E poiché so cosa vi aspetta,so anche che “alcune” persone alla fine si sentiranno piuttosto in imbarazzo,quindi non preoccuparti per me. Sono assolutamente certo che abbiamo prodotto il miglior album in assoluto della nostra carriera. Sia i nuovi fan che quelli vecchi avranno una sorpresa,non ho dubbi!

In Italia,dove vivo io,siamo in molti a pensare che il metal in generale stia andando incontro ad un decadimento: escono sempre meno band,se ci sono propongono comunque un sound stantio privo di quell’innovazione stilistica che hanno tirato fuori band come la tua e di conseguenza si parla della fine del metal sempre più prossima... Tu cosa ne pensi? Ritieni sia corretto? Anche in Svezia si sta assistendo ad una situazione come quella da me descritta? Credi davvero che il metal sia destinato a scomparire oppure che stia andando verso una nuova direzione che gli permetterà di evolversi e dunque prosperare per altri anni?

Guarda,ho ascoltato metal per la maggior parte della mia vita. Ora mi avvicino ai 50 anni. E se c’è una cosa che so,è che la scena si è evoluta e continuerà ad evolversi anche in futuro. E che sicuramente continuerà ad esistere forte come sempre. Il metal ha la “fan-base” più devota di qualsiasi altro genere musicale. Basta guardare i più grandi metal festival in tutto il mondo. Quindi,chiunque affermi il contrario,solo lui/lei è quello/a a cui non piace ed ha perso la passione per questo genere.

Come reputi la scena metal ed in particolare quella black metal odierna? Cos’è cambiato oggi rispetto agli anni ’90 quando voi avete iniziato a suonare? Secondo te,c’è un ottimo supporto a band come la vostra nel tuo paese? E all’estero? Cosa ne pensi dei fan italiani e della scena metal italiana?

Dopo trent’anni la scena sarebbe apparsa certamente strana e piuttosto noiosa anche se il tutto negli anni ’90 era esattamente uguale a quella che conosciamo oggi. Sei d’accordo? Chi vuole indossare sempre le stesse scarpe (beh,in realtà lo facevo per un po’ di tempo ma ora non più)? Là fuori,ci sono una sacco di ottime band black metal,vecchie e nuove. La scena è molto viva. Detto questo,non sto dicendo che mi piacciono tutte le svolte e le direzioni che ha preso,ma per mantenere una scena viva e vegeta,ci deve essere spazio per diversi fronti altrimenti si estinguerebbe del tutto. Dopotutto,solo le pecore percorrono la strada maestra,seguono il gregge ed hanno paura di aprire nuovi orizzonti,che per me sono una parte importante e persino la ragione per cui il black metal esiste. Abbiamo un supporto straordinario qui in Svezia,ma anche in molti altri paesi. Anche l’Italia ci ha sempre trattato molto bene ed è sempre un ottimo piacere suonare lì.

Ci sono particolari aneddoti accaduti nel viaggio della tua carriera attraverso tour e registrazioni dei vari album?

Troppi per poterli raccontare in una discussione del genere... Forse un giorno scriverò un libro...

Quali altri obiettivi speri di raggiungere in futuro? Cosa possiamo aspettarci dai Dark Funeral nei prossimi anni?

Come sempre continueremo ad evolverci come band,continueremo a migliorare,continueremo a confrontarci,musicalmente ed artisticamente. Continueremo a lavorare sodo ed a raggiungere nuove vette in ogni possibile aspetto!

THE LORD TO LORD AHRIMAN

Hail Satan, Ahriman! Welcome to the Sabba Maledetto Metal Circle! Thank you so much for the time you gave us. Let's start with the first question: Dark Funeral was founded in 1993. What did idea of founding the band start? Did you have any other musical experiences before Dark Funeral? What was the black metal music scene like in the 90s? What special memories do you have? Tell us about it.

My first band were called Satan's Disciples. And after that we formed Dark Funeral, but before we finally became Dark Funeral,in early 1993, the band were called Ahriman, and featured Nicko on drums and not Draugen who eventally ended up playing drums on our debut Mini-CD. However, I didn't want to name the band after myself,Blackmoon (R.I.P.) and I came up with the name Dark Funeral one day when we were at my place. And the rest is history. Early 90's Black Metal scene were quite crazy and chaotic,including our lives, much different from my nowdays more controlled chaos way of living. Life is a dark journey, you learn, improve and develop, well at least some of us...

The sound of Dark Funeral music is, obviously, characteristic of the second wave of black metal that originated in the 90s right in Scandinavia... I know it seems strange to ask but... you had other bands or musicians in particular who inspired you back then? If so, which ones?

Not really. When we started the band we felt that we wanted to create something new and different from what everyone was doing at that time. I still have the same opinion on that bit, to walk our own dark road...

While we're at it, let's dig into the past a bit and then come back to us: the second wave of black metal originated from the ideas of  Euronoymous who with his Mayhem and his Helvete started a new way of playing music that in his once spawned a new subculture that took hold in Norway and in other countries. Swedish bands like yours, Abruptum and Marduk, draw inspiration from the fledgling Norwegian scene for your albums? If not, what prompted Swedes to try their hand at such an extreme genre that in the 90s it exploded like thunder in the lands of Northern Europe? What substantial difference was there between Norwegian black metal and Swedish black metal that were born in those years? Have you ever had contact with the guys from the Norwegian black metal scene who according to many rumors formed the core of the infamous Black Circle?According to many people there were a lot of tensions and rivalries between the Swedish and Norwegian musicians: is that true? If so, what was the reason that led to these antagonisms?

At that time there were some rivalries between some Swedish and Norwegian bands, but nothing that we affected us. We were also good friends with Dissection, Marduk & Abruptum. We also had a very good contact, mutual respect and friendship to many our Norwegian counterparts than and now.

I ask you some personal questions: how did you get the passion for this genre? How was your passion for the guitar born? How long have you been playing guitar and what prompted you to do so by taking the road that led you to where you are today?

I come from a music oriented family so music have always been very close to my heart. With that said, I never really dreamed of becoming a musician, songwriter or full-time musician, but I have always been drawn to music & to playing various instruments, until I finally landed on guitar. When I was younger, I was more into theater, creating brutal movie effects or even becoming a film director. Now that I think about it, that's probably why I've always seen my music-writings as a film, a musical & visual expression that must go hand in hand. I have had a great interest and I also started collecting, at that time, uncensored, horror movies when I was 12 years old already. So I've always been against censorship too. When I was 14, I had as an optional subject in school, something they called "film & drama". But back to the music, after our constant success with our albums & tours, which of course includes a huge amount of hard work and commitment, I guess I have just followed the rolling steam locomotive without thinking so much more about it, not more than that I always want improve, challenge & push the boundaries of everything that comes my/our way.

The themes of Dark Funeral, especially in the first two CDs, all revolve between dakness and Satanism while in Attera Totus Sanctus you begin to feel a more "apocalyptic" and violent atmosphere: why there was this change of style which consequently also changed the sound of Drak Funeral towards faster and more aggressive? How much Dark Funeral's themes are related to your life mindset?

Well, as the music I/we write reflect an era of time in my/our life when it's written, it's just like life itself. You go through different mood and stages, so does the music. I want to challenge myself in different ways as well, so that's naturally why the music differ on every records. Still, I think we have always kept the core of our music pretty much intact, with some natural progression and experimental exception of course.

What is the CD you most appreciate about Dark Funeral? Is there any record in your career where you would change something that maybe doesn't satisfy you?

If I could, there's things, on every album I'd like to do some smaller changes on, but you know what. I've come to learn to accept that each record is a testimony of it's time. And I know we all did our best when they were written and recorded, so there's really no reason to look back with any regrets. At the moment I feel We Are The Apocalypse really is our best work. It also reflect my/our state of mind at this time.

Let's talk about We Are The Apocalypse, your new album whose release is scheduled for March this year: what will the album be about? Will you return to dark sounds like in The Secrets Of The Black Arts or will you continue towards more scabrous notes like in Exuro pro Eternus? Some fans have expressed the opinion on new single Let The Devil In that is too "slow" for the "absence of blast-beat" and are raising doubts about the quality of the album: you have free space on my blog to reply and sweep it away al fears of the most uncertain fans about the quality of the album.

I honestly though it was only holy priest and religious people who where the once to quickly judge you at a first glance, but apparently this plague have also reached the Black Metal scene, very sad indeed! With that said, the overall response have literally been amazing. And that's really all what matters. The album We Are The Apocalypse, will be released on March 18th, 2022 via Century Media Records. And since I know what's coming your way soon, I also know that "some" people will feel quite embarrassed eventually, so no worries from my side. I feel absolutely confident that we have created our absolute best album in our career. Both new and old fans will be in for a treat, no doubt!

In Italy, where I live, many of us think that metal in general is going to decline: fewer and fewer bands are coming out, if there are they offer a stale sound without that stylistic innovationlike your band that allowed metal to still thrive and consequently we talk about the end of metal ever closer... What do you think about it? Do you think this is correct? Also in Sweden you are witnessing a situation like the one I have described? Do you really believe that metal is destined to disappear or is it going in a new direction that will allow it to evolve and therefore thrive for other years?

Listen, I've been listening to Metal for most part of my life. And I'm closing in to 50. And if there is one thing I do know, is that the scene have and will keep on evolving now and in the future. And that it will definitely continue to exist, strong as always.Metal have one of the most dedicated fan-base of any music genre. Just look at the bigger Metal festivals around the world. It really is amazing how many people that shows up to support the bands. So whoever says different, he/she alone might be the one who just don't like and have the passion for Metal anymore.

How do you consider the metal scene and in particular the black metal scene today? What has changed today compared to the 90s when you started playing? Do you think there is great support for bands like yours in your country?And how is it abroad? What do you think of Italian fans and Italian metal scene?

30 years later -  it sure would be strange and quite boring of the scene and all was exact the same today like it was 1990s, don't you agree? Who wants to go in the same shoes all the time (well, actually I used to do that for quite some time, but not anymore)? There's a lot of good black metal bands out there, new and old. The scene is very mush alive. With that said, I'm not saying that I like all the different direction and turns it has taken, but to keep a scene live and kicking, there must be allowance for different takes, or it would die out completely. After all, only sheep walk the safe way, follow the big herd, and are afraid of breaking new grounds, which for me is one important part and even reason Black Metal exist. We do have an amazing support here in Sweden, but also in many other countries. Italy have always treated to us very good too. And it's always a pleasure to play there.

Are there any particular anecdotes that have happened in your journey between tours and recordings of the various albums during your career?

Too many to tell in such a forum... Maybe someday I write a book...

What the other goals do you hope to achieve in your future? What can we expect from Dark Funeral in the coming years?

As always we will continue to evolve as a band, keep improving, keep challenging ourselves, musically and artistically. We will continue to work hard and set out to reach new heights in every possible aspect!
